Firearm Transfers

If any of the following apply, you'll need to use a dealer to transfer a firearm:

  • You want to buy a gun on the internet
  • You are having a firearm shipped in from out-of-state
  • You wish to complete a private sale having already done four in the current calendar year
  • You are not comfortable completing a private sale on your own

I'm a federal and MA state licensed dealer (FFL). I do transfers by appointment for $50 cash if you take all the packing materials, or $75 cash if I have to dispose of them (I really don't like dealing with cardboard and packaging materials).

Here is how to proceed:

Buying a gun from Gunbroker
  1. Contact me to ensure that it is legal to transfer the firearm in MA. Include a link to the item.
  2. Go to my FFL info on Gunbroker and click the "Save Default FFL" button. This will allow the seller to automatically get a file copy of my FFL (required for shipping).
  3. Send me the tracking number when the item ships. I'll contact you to do the transfer.
Buying a gun from Anywhere (or anyone) else that will be shipped here
  1. Contact me to ensure that it is legal to transfer the firearm in MA. Include a link to the item or provide as much information about the firearm as possible. The details are important.
  2. Have the seller/transferor contact me for a file copy of my FFL (required for shipping).
  3. Send me the tracking number when the item ships. I'll contact you to do the transfer.
Person-to-Person Transfers
  1. Contact me to ensure that it is legal to transfer the firearm in MA. Provide as much information about the firearm as possible. The details are important.
  2. Make an appointment to come in to my shop. The transferor (seller), the transferee (you), and the firearm must be present.
The day of the transfer

You will need: your LTC, the state-issued PIN that came with your LTC, and $50 (or $75) cash.
If you are doing a person-to-person transfer, the seller/transferor will need an LTC or other state-issued ID.

Here is the process:

  1. I log the gun into my bound book.
  2. You fill out a federal Form 4473.
  3. I do the online federal background check.
  4. I do the online state background check (this is where I'll need your PIN).
  5. We both sign the paperwork.
  6. I fulfill the state requirements by providing you with all the necessary information and paperwork.
  7. You pay me.
  8. You walk out with your gun and a stack of papers.
  9. I complete the dealer portion of the Form 4473.
  10. I log the gun out of my bound book.

People that don't know anything about this process claim that guns are too easy to get and we need more regulations. We really don't.
